Before we explain this concept, let's go back in time for just a moment...
Back in June 2015, I (Amy here!) discovered a podcast called Call Your Girlfriend. I was immediately hooked, and then, as sisters do, I got Paige hooked too. In the weekly podcast, two best friends, Ann Friedman and Aminatou Sow, chat with each other just like best friends. It's basically like eavesdropping on a private conversation, except they discuss feminism, media, trends, current events, and the female perspective of it all. They are witty and intelligent and speak their minds. Plus, their banter is fantastic.
They often discuss the concept of Shine Theory. It's the idea that we should shine light on women who do incredible things, not tear them down in our jealousy as we women are often socialized to do. We need to celebrate other women's victories, lift them up, and look to them for inspiration. With Shine Theory, we take time to recognize the awesome things others do for womankind.
My sister and I have been listening to Ann and Aminatou talk about Shine Theory almost every week for over a year. Their desire to shine light on other amazing women inspired us to start this blog.
